Named by the Romans for the goddess of love but known since ancient times, Venus has fascinated astronomers, mariners and observers of the heavens. Its temperature and atmosphere also make the planet inhospitable to life. The surface temperature of the planet is 477 C, the hottest in the solar system, and its atmosphere is toxic, made up of 96 per cent carbon dioxide with clouds of sulphuric acid.
