Critics o modern western society say it is nihilistic: live for today, enjoy yourself, there is no meaning to the big questions, no soul to explore, no mystery to enter, now spirit to expand. Classically, the other side of nihilism is eternalism - the belief in a self that lives for ever (in heaven, say). Both share in common that they are weak escapes from the full beingness which is the successful human quest.
