I suppose it has been my convenient imagination that I am in control. Isn't this something how it goes; "The lord helps those who help themselves" To me it means that David felt not only abandoned by everyone but angry, isolated and so alone with his hurt and depression. I think David felt forgotten by not only his fellow man, but by God. I've felt like that myself when the circumstances life throws at you sometimes seem hopeless. Even Jesus cried out on the cross asking why God had forsaken him. In the second half of the psalm David's feelings change from suffering to letting go of grief and pain. It's difficult because this world in which we live can be a very hurtful place and all human beings, believers or non-believers, experience suffering, hurt, anger, and frustration and that can be so intense at times. I shared it with you because we sang it during Lent in the church I used to go to before it's demise. Everyone held hands and sang so loudly that you would have thought it was a Protestant church! If I could add a visual to that song, I'd add the ending to the movie "Places In The Heart" where characters who have been killed are praying alongside the living. That scene hints how different things could have been with tolerance and understanding. |
