willhelm says: Waht a disgusting picture this paints of blue state America interesting...and surprising. Curiously, Phil doesn't say where he got his data or how he calculated his index. He's just making it up. How many ways does one rebut this lie? Perhaps one can begin by looking at http://www.taxfoundation.org/research/show/62.html to notice that allmost all those "generous" red states are actually net beneficiary states in federal tax transfer, a much larger sum of money than the little bit of money that Phil is talking about. Second, you would show what this "generosity index" refers to? I am highly suspicious? Is it based on GuideStar data from 990s? Does it refelct all non-profits? How do we know where the donors live? Are the data biased by including religious organizations, do... The Generosity Index was calculated and reported by The Catalogue For Philanthropy, whose main purpose as far as I can tell is to shame wealthy New Englanders into donating more to charities. It is Republican partisans who are putting this red state vs. blue state spin on the index. The Index is based on the difference between the "Having Rank" and the "Giving Rank". The Having Rank is average per capita income; the Giving Rank is the average charitable donation reported to the IRS (by people who itemize their tax deductions). The contributions of people who donate to charities but do not take a tax deduction would... I've lived in red states and blue states. My experience has been that those in certain parts of the country are just more community driven. As far as Merican's rediculous assertion that religious donations support their own cultural services is just plain ignorant. My church raiseed 6 figures for tsnami relief, six figures for katrina releif, untold thousands for charities without regard to religion. We have fed, clothed, and provided medical services for africa, support drug and alcohol treatment centers. Usually the ones getting our donations don't even know where it came from. I don't think this chart is absolute fact, but I do believe it is more accurate, than not. Aha, so when you itemize your taxes, you do not count the part of your donations that go to supporting your minister's salary or paying of your church building's debt? We are a debt free church. Also my church has about 2500 members, so I don't think my tithe would be a significant portion of my misiter's salary. Also , we get to choose how our tithes are used. I usually do not give to the general fund. That's just me... However, if it did go to paying for the building or salary , that would be fine. It would be an investment to sustain a higher good, which as I pointed out earlier does a lot of good around the world. Merican, be generous. Next time your at a fast food drive through, pay for the peson behind you. Giving is contagious |
