invictus says: Articles on the nature and causes of poverty by Anup Shah. In the face of such enormous external influence the governments of poor nations and their people are often powerless. As a result, in the global context, a few get wealthy while the majority struggle. There is an overwhelmingly religious mandate, often ignored by fundamentalists, to alleviate the plight of those who are in need. Jim Wallis, editor of Sojourners magazine, reports that he and a group of other seminary students searched the Bible to find every verse that referred to wealth and poverty. They were impressed to discover that one out of every sixteen verses in the New Testament, on in ten in three of the Gospels, and on in seven in the Gospel of Luke referred to... In my class, he declared that "people are poor because they are lazy." He was opposed to labor unions, social security, enviromental protection, Medicare, and public schools. To him, the antitrust watch dog, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Securities Exchange Commission were unnecessary hindrances to "free market competition". To him, Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was "socialism".And the American people elected him President - two terms in a row... No money, no education, no opportunities We have become the gears of the clock-makers. Time, money and necesity have us wound tight. With our privacy & liberties in limbo of the president's opinion. If we slip up, the man's there to check-up on us. Who is to say that w. couldn't claim the destitude as enemy combatants of the socio-econmic wealth of our nation and send them to "ranches". More times than not, the wealthy would just perfer to keep the impoverished out-of -sight and out-of-mind. I am still upset with the nation for electing the fool prez, twice. A few hundred millionaires now own as much wealth as the world’s poorest 2.5 billion people. When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist. |
