A fragic but funny side note: When the U.S. began invading Iraq, the administration called the invasion "Operation Iraqi Liberation. Well. After a few days, some bright young thing informed the Bush administration's spin doctors that Operation Iraqi Liberation's acronym spelled O.I.L.. Probably took a few minutes for the POTUS and his chums to realize that, although the acronym was an incredibly clever, tongue-in-cheek truth (and, I'm sure, quite deliberate), it was not a good one to use with the public because it would not allow us to maintain the pretense that we were invading for high-minded principles. So. Our offensive became "Operation Iraqi Freedom". What a country! |
