Antara says: bah And Christian pharmacists won't fill prescriptions for birth control or the morning after pill. Bah. If the inherent requirements of a job are odious or unacceptable to you, DON'T TAKE THE JOB. That would seem to be obvious. Yours truly is not applying for work at Monsanto or Archer-Daniels-Midland because I think what they do is unethical and evil. But I'm not getting myself hired and then saying "oops, sorry, not going to do the job you hired me to do." Too true Lexia. It reminds me of people who work in bars complaining about smoke. Jeesh! Dulios, Lexica spotlights the difference in the two situations: The Pharmacist had a job and now they are telling him he has to do something that wasn't part of the job when he took it. The fork lift driver took a job where he knew he was going to have to handle alcohol. The Pharmacist had a job and now they are telling him he has to do something that wasn't part of the job when he took it.A pharmacist's job is to fill prescriptions. Period. But the Pharmacists are being told they have to perform something that wasn't part of the job. And many of these Pharmacists own the places where they work. If the Muslim guy owned the store where he worked I wouldn't have a problem with him choosing to stock or not to stock whatever he wished. If a Pharmacists owns a store he should be able to refuse to refill any prescription he wishes But the Pharmacists are being told they have to perform something that wasn't part of the job. A pharmacist's job is to fill prescriptions. Period. sillysam (an appropriate Clipname, by the way) where have you been for the last 48 years? The birth control pill went on the market on 9 May 1960 (not to mention the fact that IUDs go back about a hundred years and diaphragms & rubbers are older than dirt), meaning that anyone entering the profession in that time, which by now means almost everyone who hasn't retired, has done so with the awareness that they might be called upon to deal with contraception. If they did study pharmacy without considering this, they did so with their heads firmly up their butts. Another thing is that independent pharmacies are almost entirely a thing of the past. Where I live, a metropolitan area with a popu... Damned text editor screwed up my comment again. My closing: It's less about a matter of conscience than it is imposing one's own will upon others. I've noticed that conservatives are more than willing to promote libertarian-style individualism except where their own ideals are concerned. Great link, Jorjor, thanks. I personally am waiting for the day when men begin complaining that while trying to fill a Viagra prescription, their pharmacist insists on proof that they are married or straight. I bet I'll be waiting for a looooooong time. It's possible to buy Viagra and all the other dick pills over the web without a prescription. |
