We have all seen the images from abu ghraib, or at least most have, now put those in a glossy magazine, add some articles, interviews, and cartoons, and it is exactly what some people pass off as "porn mags" these days! Is it harmful? What do you think?

Thank you very much, sahara, for bringing this aspect up. I'd like to know other clippers' opinion on this subject.
My first response is:
Vilifying, humiliating, tormenting, destroying, be it connected with sexuality or not, is distasteful, revolting, loathsome, repellent, repugnant, sickening, abhorrent, abominable, disgusting.
But that does not answer your question, nor the question of the headline of the clipped article.
The subject of both of these questions is the representation of objectionable (or at least questionable) practices (and the attitudes which underlie them). That is actually a complex topic.
I'll get back to it tonight. (Now it's afternoon )

I fear you have a long night ahead, Johanna G! This topic is a quagmire. But I look forward to what you have to say.

You're right, abailart. Bearing the quagmire in mind , I procrastinate the announced statement. (We're having stormy nights in Germany at present. )

Ex ante I refer to this report: Teens Sexually Assaulted Girl, Filmed It and Distributed It On DVD, whereby the tenor of my statement-to-be is being implied.

That is a horrible story.

I did research back in 80s on 'video nasties', and the 'moral panic' that violent videos caused violent behaviour. There was no conclusion except that there is no conclusion.

I will try to find where i saw recently a report saying that pornography usage has increased dramatically with the internet, while the number of sex crimes has decreased over the same period. Not an argument, of course, but relevant data.

I think that 'pornography' is such a broad term (and my research had to clarify usage of the word 'violence') that one would perhaps have to specify very precisely the terms one was using, and the strands of harm, types of pornography, demographic usage et...
