Who Controls the U.S. Media?

For the most part, the media spreads a lot of misinformation and corporate propaganda. This is not at all surprising considering that Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, Viacom (formerly CBS) and General Electric's NBC are the top owners of the entire media industry, which includes everything you read and hear in newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies.

In the last 15 years alone, your sources for news have shrunk drastically. Whereas in 1983, 50 corporations ruled the U.S. news media, by 2004 this number decreased to a minuscule six corporations!

As you might imagine, with just six corporations deciding what’s worthy of news and what’s not, you end up with sensationalized tragedies, celebrity features, and anything else that will capture people’s attention.

This is more serious than the reduction of rights and liberties on the last 8 years. At least every 4 years you can change the politician. The non competitive media mogul just get stronger and are answerable to no one, yet pick the leaders. Even Obama.

This is not the case with the US, which ranks 36th domestically and 119th outside its own territory.

The US was founded in large part on the first amendment, which includes the freedom of speech. So for the US to be ranked only 36th for free press sure seems like a colossal step backwards.

Yet this is a vast improvement from where the US has ranked in the past. In 2006, it was only 53rd on the Index, and it rose 12 more places in the last year alone.

Yes - it was almost impossible to hear anything but BusHitler screams and rants the past 8 years. The media did everything but wipe the Messiah's butt when he took a crap - so you got what you wanted.

Luckily traditional news organizations are starting to fail. Print news papers carrying yesterday's history are giving way to instant online versions and I see no reason that the live news can't be forced to tell the real unbiased truth about events if people will just stop watching the biased crap. That is of course unless we keep letting the gov take control of more and more things, then youtube (and any other source of information not controlled by the gov) will get banned here just like China b/c it will carry information that big brother deems unfit for our fragile eyes and ears.

jeez d1211 what is this anti-socialism thing you have ? Your country needs some socialism to make it a more humane society. Functional modern societies need enough revenue to pay for the 3 things all populations say they want:

1 Education system - give all kids a chance
2 Healthcare - Universal provision, which means government subsidy
3 Elderly care - people don`t want to starve in an alley when they`re old
