I don't know if it's a placebo effect and I don't really care, but it seems to help my seasonal allergies. I heard on a PBS science podcast by Robert Krulwich that: There are about 100 trillion cells in an average adult human body. Your large intestine hosts 100 billion bacteria in every gram (1/30th of an ounce) of your intestine. Each adult hosts trillions and trillions of bacteria total. There are 10-20 times more bacteria/microbe cells in each adult than there human mammal cells.
