WOW! What an incredible shot. EricG and I were in the office yesterday when it suddenly became close to pitch black, then the building started creaking, then it started pouring. I saw one crazy blast of lightning -- I wonder if this was it.

Apparently this happens about 100 times a year, according to the official ESB web site. Here's some pictures of past strikes:

United States sure know how to build a lightning rod.
If lightning is a sign God is trying to tell us something, it would seem he has a lot to say. Lightning is one of those things that can remind us how small we are, and how we are subject to the forces of nature, weather we like it or not. It can be spectacular, and remind you you're alive with a flash

Pokkets, The United States didn't build the Empire state Building. The French did

Very nice shot! As someone who likes to photograph lightening but doesn't get much opportunity (live in an area of very little lightening), I know from experience that the only way you can get this type of daytime shot, other than incredibly sheer luck, is to have a photo-electric eye mounted to your camera that is specially designed to trigger the shutter the instant a strike is detected. Night-time lightening shots are much easier to capture since you can simply set your camera to the bulb setting and leave the shutter open for as long as you wish. Most lightening shots that you see are of this type. Multiple strikes burned onto one frame of film that struck over a period of minutes or in ...

hadtoomuch, methinks you are confusing the Empire state building with the Statue Of Liberty.

Nice! I wonder if there is a way to put that energy to use?
