HAL in 2001 was personable but still a 'complicated' computer as portrayed to the audience, until in the decommissioning scene,when HAL was afraid. That fear breathed life into the character. and of course 'Daisy'. Fear wasn't part of the program.
Suddenly the Audience could identify with him.
So HAL became more 'human' because he was taught to lie.
When SAL the next model was asked about her attitude to being 'switched off' for the sake of a test, the reply was "I don't have enough information."
When she asked Dr Chandra if she would dream, he said Yes, of course, all sentient creatures dream. He lied. He didn't know that.
It was an opinion that was presented as a fact.
