When Hal asked the same question in the last scene of 2010 he came clean after he learned of the ramification of introducing computers to the concept of lying,even 'white lies' He couldn't lie
to HAL. All he could say was "I don't know"

We can rationalize the 'Life' out of life, but life doesn't change, only our opinion and description. Will Robots ever dream?
Sure, they might but we're never going to Know.
We have at least as much trouble with our definition of dreams, as our definitions of life.
