merrie says: Fury over cat eating festival . . . . . . .They believe that eating cat burgers – and fried cat legs and tails – can cure bronchial disease. It is also believed that feline meat serves as an aphrodisiac. The cats are bred especially for this festival – which takes place at the end of September on the Day of Santa Ifigenia. But it has generated fury among animal rights groups. Why are we still paying attention to what PETA has to say? They are the lunatic fringe of humane animal treatment advocates; i.e. screaming nutbars. Haven't you heard the latest fool stunt they pulled? They tried to get Ben & Jerry's to make their ice cream with human milk because "milking cows are cruel". PETA obviously doesn't know anything about the dairy industry, or the human female body and the distress milking the breasts causes. If you're concerned about ethical animal care, then ignore PETA and pay attention to your national Humane Society. They pay attention to what's ethical to humans first, and then animals. Are you suggesting that the marketing of dogs and cats for consumption in China doesn't exist? The horse-meat "industry" was only recently banned in Texas and Illinois! [their slaughter-houses were resisting their bans in the courts] Kitten as Food While most tolerate and occasionally prefer this obviously less-cute form of a cat, the people of Peru will have nothing of the sort. Every September, people from around the country flock to the small farming town of La Quebrada to celebrate the festival of Saint Efigenia. During the festival, the small African descendant minority in Peru celebrate their unique forms of art, dancing, music, and, of course, cat cooking techniques. http:/... If they're killed humanely, what's the problem. There's too many things being done to humans to get outraged at to worry about some people doing what the good Lord told them; eat of the animals of the earth. pay attention to your national Humane Society. They pay attention to what's ethical to humans first, and then animals. If they're killed humanely, what's the problem. Yes, killed humanely. They're meat. We're meat. We're all meat. Is a shark being inhumane when it eats a human? Then what's so bad about killing cats without causing suffering and making food out of them? If they're not anyone's pets, and they don't need them to control rodents, that a rather elegant and efficient plan to deal with a pussycat overpopulation, too. Just because they're cute, it doesn't mean they aren't delicious. Your entire proposition is creepy and disingenuous. You don't know them. You don't know their culture. In India, some people would be willing to kill you because your culture eats beef. By what right do you judge them? As I said before; if the animal is killed humanely, what's the harm?. And no, I'm not a cat hater. I have a cat of my own that I care about very much. I would never dream of eating him, but I'm not Peruvian. It seems to me that for them, this festival is no different from us eating Prime Rib. Traditional Koreans ate dogs, Now we have a Peruvian festival where they eat cats, and some restaurants in Singapore are making good money serving rat meat. It's all just meat. As a cat Mum, this is highly disturbing to me. I'm aware that my bias towards eating f.ex. cats or dogs, stems from the fact that I have strong emotional connections to these animals. Other cultures may not and though it kills me, I cannot with good conscience say, that eating cows or chickens is any better than eating other animals. I had a pet chicken once and they have fantastic personalities too. It's all about feeling a connection, I guess. I still wish they wouldn't eat cats though. The idea of eating kittens in a ritualistic celebration is too disgusting for anyone to justify or rationalize. I grew up with pets and have had pets throughout my life. The humane treatment of animals when they are terminally ill is to euthanize them and it's not an occasion celebration. And as far as humane killing, there was NO mention in any article that those defenseless kittens were granted any such fate. 1) Who said they were kittens? You're falling for the emotional-blackmail picture that the original poster added to the story. In fact, a Moggy is a name for an adult cat. That is the only possible indication of the age of the cats in the story 2) There was NO mention in the article that they weren't being humanely killed. Why are you assuming they aren't? More emotional blackmail. 3) THEY'RE MEAT, PERIOD. HUMANS ARE MEAT-EATERS. Get over it. As much as the thought of eat a cat or a dog or a horse personally appals and revolts me, one man's pet is another man's food. In Africa practically everything is eaten from elephants to mice and cats included. I have no objection to the kill and eat philosophy as long as it's done humanely. Only the wealthy over-indulged western world can afford the luxury of being squeamish about which animals are deemed as food. In the rest of the world it's kill and eat or starve. There's a couple of points that are being overlooked here: (a) We eat cows and pigs and chickens here in the US. 99.9% of those animals consumed were living in inhumane conditions and probably killed inhumanely as well. Why? Because its cheaper and more profitable to squeeze as many animals as you can in a pen. Worrying about making sure the animals have good lives and get quick and painless deaths is not good for the bottom line. (b) For reasons of efficiency, I would not be surprised if kittens raised for this alleged festival were also living and dying in inhumane conditions. I think michellezm was saying this, but if not I'll say it: there is no principled way to criticize a grou... |
