ljsdesign says: -Pharr, Texas, and Flint, Mich., each had more than a third of its residents on food stamps, at 38.5 percent and 35.4 percent, respectively. --Between 2007 and 2008, income at the 50th percentile (median) and the 10th percentile fell by 3.6 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively, compared with a 2.1 percent decline at the 90th percentile. Between 1999 and 2008, income at the 50th and 10th percentiles decreased 4.3 percent and 9 percent, respectively, while income at the 90th percentile was statistically unchanged. --Plano, Texas, a Dallas suburb, had the highest median income among larger cities, earning $85,003. Cleveland ranked at the bottom, at $26,731. The findings come as the federal government considers new regulations to rein in executive pay at companies in which it has invested. President Barack Obama also typically cites the need for higher taxes on the wealthy to pay for health care overhaul and other measures, arguing that the wealthy have disproportionately benefited from tax cuts during the Bush administration. Associated Press writer Frank Bass contributed to this report. *sigh* As someone making below the median, I am so tired of hearing people at work poor-mouthing about how broke they are and how hard it is for them to get by. People, I know how much you make! Some of you are in that "10% richest above $138,000" group, and every single one of you makes at least twice as much as I do. Argh. We're just below that median too and husband works a full-time job and 2 part-time ones. Soon the only people who will have any money and decent health care will be Politicians. They are the ones creating this widening gap. It's the wealthy people (by & large) who build businesses that provide jobs for us and who donate, contribute and volunteer to the humanitarian organizations. @Lexica--Educators need to be paid more. IMHO they have the most important job with the least amount of pay. And thank you for doing it. @jatfla--you do realize big corporations only donate when they are assured a tax break for doing so. Another point I would like to point outis small business, Mom and Pop shops, did much more for jobs and the economy then the big guys do. They're the ones that hire teens in the summer. They're the ones who help our local economies. And there the ones who are being driven out by the "big box marts" which is what has helped land us in this dire circumstance to begin with. They didn't get the same tax cuts as the big boys. As for politicians, they will never... "...-you do realize big corporations only donate when they are assured a tax break for doing so." Of course. I use to hear many of these being "thanked" for their contributions and "gifts" on the PBS channel...when I use to watch it. Even small businesses do so for the every same reason. A local dentist I know will do services at no charge for indigent and poor people knowing that he can add it as a tax write-off later. Hiring teens? Everyone hires teens that are willing to work. Their "thanks"are more like commercial breaks compared to PBS 20 years ago, when it was really good. and if you haven't noticed teen unemployment rates are up as well. Gee, where are those big corporations and ball those jobs we could use. They ask for bail outs and then instead of fixing the problems with the corporation, paying their employees, or getting their act together ,they give the top execs bonuses . That's trinkle down economics right there. What a wonderful waste of both of our tax payer dollars. I can really see why you hold them in such high regard. last sentence reveals genuine ignorance of my thinking and my integrity and world-view. I could go really off but it's not worth mine or your time. See you on another clip. :~) |
