Another problem is that too many electronic programs are offered by misguided parents. Use of materials, such as blocks, is the better system for little ones. This, of course requires attention from the supervisor be it at home or school. There is also the fact that children are not ready for formal education until they are seven. Americans I knew who were working in Australia were very keen to get their little ones into formal situations. Play, especially free play, is more important socially at this stage of life. I couldn't agree more with Tabsey's comment. This focus on early formal education (as young as 3 in some UK schools) was one of the main reasons we home-educated (not home-schooled, as what we do bears no resemblance to school). We also avoid the religious indoctrination that still goes on in many UK schools - particularly at the primary level. |
