Aesop "To feel envy is human, to savour schadenfreude is devilish." (Arthur Schopenhauer) Sometimes I feel guilty for my happiness and peace that I feel personally. When I'm gone someday, I hope the people that know me remember me as having compassion in my heart. The idea of finding comfort in someone else's misery is foreign to me. I don't doubt that some find comfort seeing others struggle though. Until you are on the bottom looking up I've seen some serious lows skwirl; I've been evicted with no place to go, had a serious addiction problem in the past - never, not once did I find comfort in the misery of others during that time. good to read this Alan... I'm not saying I did either but some people can't deal with their misfortunes and as long as there is someone worse they don't feel as bad. Some actively try to keep others below them so they can feel better in their misery. I find myself often looking up from the bottom of the pile. |
