truth revealed at long last! i am practicing this 4 already long time. it works .. Ones to avoid if you're feeling down: Requiem for a dream - disturbing / brilliant Fargo - funny in parts with the right kind of humour Pearl Harbour (because its just drivel) Great clip Nefer One of my greatest joys in recent years has been seeing people with severe and enduring mental health problems fall in love with the movies. Some of them hadn't been for many years. Some had rarely gone out at all. There is something more than enjoyment which arises, something very beautiful to be near. If anyone wants to enrich another person's life, watch a film together. (Though probably not Requiem for a Dream! tho i it is brilliant). For ages the nay sayers condemned TV saying that it can modify the behavior and mental patterns of people. All this has been denied by joe public and big TV execs. I find this ironic that a positive slant is put on the same information and people agree with it even though the end result is the same. It seems there are multiple sides to every argument and people tend to take the side of that which makes them less uncomfortable. Cinema is a different medium enirely than television. The one is a central organiser of domestic life and the main apparatus of information about the world. The other is highlighted in the clip's claims as an experience which works powerfully to organise emotional life. McLuhan contrasts the 'cool' medium of televison with the 'hot' medium of cinema. I do agree that the issue is complex. As always the propensity to 'take sides' on the basis of some comforting polarity is just a reflection of the tendency to reduce complex issues to neat sound bites with the intellectual appeal of a tidy kitchen. I knew it was true! Watching movies is so often mood-lifting or just plain cathartic. And what are books -- chopped liver? I like watching movie. And a little bit addicted to it. It is my best friends when i am down. |
