I recommend you read Alex Kotlowitz's There are No Children Here. It may help one better understand the streets of Chicago, and why they're so different from your own.

I have not read the book, but I would bet those "streets" are the same in New Orleans,Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Atlanta and New York, to name a few.

You're right. Black urban poverty looks the same all over the country. This author simply chose to spend time in one of Chicago's projects.
