I recommend you read Alex Kotlowitz's There are No Children Here. It may help one better understand the streets of Chicago, and why they're so different from your own. I have not read the book, but I would bet those "streets" are the same in New Orleans,Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Atlanta and New York, to name a few. You're right. Black urban poverty looks the same all over the country. This author simply chose to spend time in one of Chicago's projects. Is there something we should realize from this? Are there any "poor" white neighborhoods that have the same problem? Is there something we should realize from this? That I'm sure we'd come to different conclusions about the causes. |
