The Carpenters also owned apartment complexes in Downey named for some of their hit songs, "Close to You" was located across the street from "We've Only Just Begun". I lived in Downey for a short time between 1980 and 1983 -- we would occasionally drive by these places. Karen Carpenter's funeral kept me from getting home for hours -- the streets were so jammed with cars, walking would have been much faster.
