I think that it is very likely that the increase in the use of "recreational" drugs is linked to the state of the world as it becomes more hectic and controlling, people seem to seek to refuge from it.

On a side note, Heroin and Crack and Cocaine could and should never be seen recreational as they are highly addictive and massively detrimental to physical and mental health and also to society as habitual users will often steal to support their habit of these drugs..
Other drugs while still not a good thing have nowhere near as much of an impact, also I do not think should Cannabis be classed as a drug.
