When the NBA decided to hold the first draft lottery in 1985 the league was entering the height of what many consider its golden era with Magic, Bird, Dr. J, and of course MJ. I mostly remember the look on Dave DeBusschere's face when he realized the Knicks had won the lottery - the right to select Patrick Ewing. But, I think what stood out more was the broadcast, it literally looked like your local station's nightly "pick 6" studio remote...ping pong balls and all. That's it. So much interest and simply no chance for average fans to be part of the action. Fast forward to tonight. Now, you can interact with other fans, current and former NBA players, and even celebrities in real-time on Twitter...now thats what I call access. |
