Myself, and other adults I know actually enjoy some of these novelty "toy" lighters. How about some responsibility from parents? My child, now 10, has never has to have anything of this sort taken from her nor have I had to worry about accidental use because I have always kept them unaccessible. More and more people expect products to cater to lazy parenting. One retailer in my area has placed these at the end cap shelves (eye level to the kids) and stated "we put them there because the kids like them." It goes beyond responsible parenting. Parents can't watch the child 24/7 and every second. All it takes is one child to be curious about the "toy" that makes flames and a potential danger exists. Having taught safety to children for the last 17 years, I've learned that the statement "responsible parenting" is lip service and not followed by everyone. I congratulate you for your responsibility. I wish more people would be such. We have a statement in safety education... "a lighter in the hands of a child is more dangerous than a loaded 9mm. ... |
