egoldstein says: What i get out of social media is access to information and ideas that i otherwise wouldn't find myself. Quite honestly, my social media attention is primarily allocated to Clipmarks and Amplify because these two sites provide the type of experience i'm looking for - the abilty to understand the world better by seeing it through other people's eyes. I genuinely believe i am a smarter, more well rounded person because i've had the opportunity to see what other people are reading and what they have to say about it. You are right about the ability of social media to broaden minds for the better. The article you amplifyed this from - "Why I'm Quitting Social Media" - does however make some good points about the danger of getting lost in distraction and about the absence of a sense of completion, like we get from books and movies, as we get carried away by the datastream. I like social media because in our fast-paced world, it gives me the opportunity to share moments of my life with friends/family at my leisure, and they can read it at their leisure. I also use it to network with work collegues so we can share information at the touch of a keyboard outside of work hours. Also, I like blogging because it gives me a way to get feedback on my own points of view, which is very educational. In regards to the distraction jamreilly was talking about, some people thrive on it, even making the distraction. They try to personalize it, crossing the line between being off line and being on line. It is one thing to be friendly. It is another to try to work out ones personal problems, carefully moving unaware participants around as though they were chess pieces, preparing for the next move. A very good point, chestnut501. Since we're all basically strangers on the Net, it's very easy to create an online personae that can play people. That's why personal issues should always go to Email, and the only thing being challenged is the idea. Since you bring it up That's pretty sad. One way to counterbalance that is create a free account on Yahoo, Gmail or whatever that you can use specifically for areas where you might get spammed. That way, it does not contaminate your personal Email, but if a legit person wants to contact you, they have a way. That's a good idea. I wasn't sure about the contamination part. Can it be used to do something to my computer? You can tell that I've never taken any classes, it's been pretty much hit or miss. I tried with Gmail once but I think I left out something very important. I'm pretty sure I can do it if I really set my mind to it. "Contamination" as in, filling your inbox with other than legit Emails. Thinking more along the line of something really nasty like a virus. But for most of us, social media is either an illusion of an audience or an illusion of friends. You know, that is a pretty compelling statement Eric. For me, soical media represents an opportunity to hear and to be heard. It has been life-altering to be able to connect with others in a way that I might not be able to in real life. I think it has made me a better person. It is another to try to work out ones personal problems, carefullyIs this the twilight zone? I have yet to see a clipper dump more personal issues on clipmarks than you, lol. Amazing re-write of history! Amazing too that you are apparently going to be allowed do it without challenge, and perhaps demonize others in the process. Just for the record, I have not once exchanged an email with anyone on here regarding clipmarks content or personalities. I find the very idea of it bizarre. Is there not enough for people on here? I can hardly keep up as it is. For me, this is a plac... For me, this is a place to exchange and discover : ideas, perspectives,Yup Antara, Thank you. Interesting posts Eric.Very self revealing comments. I would say that comments on this clip represent the beauty of social media. We are all exposed to a wider range of perspectives than would otherwise be possible - and i think that can only be a good thing. I agree with you. There is a lot of hype. But there is no denying the power of this awesome tool. I use the tools available to learn more, share and enjoy. Disclaimer: I own a social blogging site. As someone who both owns and actively uses social sites, I witness a lot of illusions, but that certainly doesn't comprise the majority. It can be uncertain if an audience really exists if you just count page hits, but relevant commentary doesn't seem like an illusory audience to me. The friendship one is a bit more tricky. I know of many e-friendships that eventually involved meeting in person. I even know a few couples that ended up getting married. I know of many e-friendships that eventually involved meeting in person.I've had that happen many times locally. I've met people I've known online. TN and I spent two summers together and she's from Europe. But I think everyone who comes into your life does so for a certain reason. I enjoy spending time with like-minded individuals and learning from them. We should all do lunch when you're in San Antonio. Hey, if they've got good beer in San Antonio, I can be there in 48 hours! Beer?! We don't need no stinkin' beer when we've got tequila! no stinkin' beerCareful now! That's bordering blasphemy! Tequila will do just fine ! Oh, and regarding the clip? Social media is what you make of it. You can give a little or give a lot. If you want to meet people, you can and if you don't, well, then you won't. It's just an access point IF one would be so inclined. It's my impression that Americans aren't as prone to travelling as Europeans are though and not as interested in meeting "strangers". (def: friends you just haven't met yet.) They are a little more paranoid, I guess. Heck we travel all the time, where as I have heard of Americans that have never been outside their own country!! It's true! ... Never mind wiccan, I'll poor my own. In a bit of a hurry right now. TN, Seeing you again ( if it is really you ) makes my day. Later everyone Hey Chestnut, how have ya been? *Pinching myself* Ouch! Naah, It's me. OMG, I can vouch from last summer that TN was definitely not an illusion; my liver is still recovering All right Wicca, I'm in for another adventure so just pick both us fun loving gals up @ the airport! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Moz5WrbP7Gg Yes, I do believe it's really you. You're the only one on here who uses as many smiley faces as I do. see-----> There's been a few times i could have sworn I saw you......must have been that Illusion thingy. Good to have you back TN egoldstein, you found perfect words! When I was younger and looking around in other countries, I found out, that the most of my felt "normality" is only a matter of habit and not a matter of course. Now I try to solve this experience by internet. Humans need to change their ideas and thoughts with others. And in the present is it additional the misinformation - in old days called lies - or lack of information what I want to clear by hearing other people's opinion and experiences. Thereabout are a lot of funny folks here, who make me smile - that's healthy! chestnut, I believe that you are have a too straight look (sight ?) at this! Do you know bartenders or taxi-driv... |
