Sometimes I wonder what our society would be like if we hadn't sent off the best of our gene pool to be destroyed in wars. This is survival of the worst of us. Not natures way at all.

Bearing you thought about the gene pool in mind and given that nature is not usually given to wasting a good resource, could this explain why our females might be preserving this gene pool by liaisons with males in uniform in war time.

You idea also highlights that immigrants are either the very best or very worst of the original population.

This sounds very much like a Gaia type of reaction, if so, does it mean that we don't have as much control over our actions as we think. Is modern war, with it's growing tendency to target civilians, another Gaia reaction to overpopulation? This line of reasoning could lead us to all sorts of speculation.

As you would be aware, much of our original population were Irish. Question is, were they the best or the worst? And by whose standards do you relate the answer to?

Now I'm dizzy from all this thinking!

You refer to the time when any excuse, like stealing a slice of bread, was justification for banishment to OZ. Obviously only criminals for the purpose of populating OZ.- an alternate to slavery in the Americas. Then the question arises was it the dumb ones that were caught or those with the determination and initiative to want to live. More questions.

Is it a myth that every true Aussie wants to discover a criminal somewhere in their background?

If by criminal, you mean convict, I think most of us would like that, or even a Ned Kelly or Captain Starlight would be neat.Best of all though, just the fact that we are here in OZ.

I had to check out Captain Starlight, who appears to have a number of origins but was well redeemed. Ned Kelly is an Aussie icon with a good heart. How would he fair today in OZ? Terrorist? Hang 'em high? Elect him MP? Just lock him up as a convict?

Nowadays every second young Irish person seems to have spent some length time in Australia. Few seem to head for America like before. Our housewives fill plan loads in Nov/Dec for Christmas shopping to the US.
