Are we headed for some sort of noosphere? Exciting stuff, eh?  Peter Russell shows that humanity has reached a crossroads in its evolutionary path. Computers, satellites, fiber optics, video recorders and other technology, are the catalysts linking our planet into one, worldwide community - a "global brain". This technology, combined with a the rapidly growing human potential movement, is helping to create a collective consciousness that is humanity's only hope of saving it from itself. However, Russell warns if we continue on our current path of greed and destruction, humanity will serve only as a planetary cancer. For a true singularity that changes the human condition as we know it, several advancements need to happen which are as of yet quite far off. Here's a few things I think we need to accomplish before it happens. Human equivalent AI (which would rapidly improve itself and get smarter) Bridging human and artificial memory, and downloading & reloading memories. Nanotechnology improvements providing, among other things, massive shifts in medicine, computing, energy transfer (nanotech solar, etc). Although I think many of those goals are on the horizon, I'll be extremely surprised if we see more than one of them occur in our lifetime, given the challenges we face and some major hurdles ([[clim... another five years to see what happens I used to read a blog on this sort of subject matter http://earthchanges.mindsay.com/ That's true ericskiff, if one purely thinks of a technologically based noosphere, so to speak, but what if it's a more ethereal one? A spiritual one, not requiring any advances in technology, but in biology instead? An evolution of the mind. What if one could transfer thoughts and ideas "wirelessly" to each other through thought, instead of through up and downloads? Entanglement could be the quantum "highway" that could make it possible. Could be, eh? Who knows? But is there time for that to happen? We can only hope the quickening will help us evolve either which way in an awful hurry, before we have destroyed ourselves through wars and mismanagement of the environment. .
