Only if there are no other currencies to pick up the slack. The dollar standard is one of the things that is artificially propping up the Empire. Remove that advantage and things will look very different. But a disaster, I doubt it. After all it has happened before, with the Pound standard (British Empire) and the Gold Standard.

I've read speculation that one of the real reasons Bush invaded Iraq was because Saddam Hussein was part of a faction in OPEC which wanted to move oil valuation from the dollar to the Euro. Interesting, if true.
