The man soon to be John Cardinal Foley is an extraordinary human being -- a classmate of mine at Columbia Journalism 41 years ago -- one of those who helped guide the last Pope as the powerful political force who helped end communism in Europe, and who will hopefully help this Pope through the treacherous shoals of a Catholic church that must cope with terrorism and other, new threats to democracy and religious freedom.
