There is now evidence or theory that the same Gulf Stream is the reason that so many Spanish ships were lost from the Spanish Armada! After the skirmish in the English Channel, the Armada decided for various reasons to return to Spain north of Scotland then west of Ireland. Most of these reasonably competent captained ships floundered off Ireland.
