debbyski says: He gets a "A" for his efforts at fear mongering. "As the church continues to debate the issue of homosexuality, we find ourselves facing another culture of fear. Many in the church fear those who are other, who are different, and are able to find ways to manipulate scripture to support this fear. And it certainly doesn’t help when extremely influential Christian leaders like John Piper make absolutely ridiculous statements about the connection between a freak tornado and an ELCA meeting. I have to wonder if even John Piper really believes what he has written – or whether this is a convenient way to support the discrimination and hate of the LGBT community. This is conspiratorial bunk that uses the bible as a weapon of ideology, not a source to find God's grace." debbyski I read this a while ago and had to open the windows on my house because of the smoke that came out my ears when i blew my fuse. Stuff like this is so saddening, repulsive, and frustrating. Piper is such a revered voice in the Evangelical world. And yet, he perpetuates this kind of mythological superstition akin to the hateful fearmongers who claimed god sent Katrina to punish New Orleans. How do we combat this blatant arrogance and hatred? Why is it OK to hate gay people? Why would his god hate us anyway? Why doesn't god punish him for not loving me? Why are so many christians so afraid to le me, as a gay person, make my own choices and stand before god on my own. If I sa... Tis such creeps as this that helped to form my agnosticism, cuz surely if there was such a god as portrayed in the Old Testament then in his wrath he would send a bolt of lightening down from the heavens to strike such spewers of hate and disinformation, turning them into a small mound of dust and dung. And perhaps, just perhaps sterilizing his followers and others of similar ilk, thus improving the gene pool. @Kelso & Toad: No religious conservative--Catholic, Protestant, Jew, or Muslim--would stand up in the pulpit today and declare that blacks are inferior human beings. And it's only a matter of time before they stop calling gays and lesbians inferior also. Any person who claims to be of faith who does so is just kidding him or herself. Any priest or minister who does so is not true to his vocation. And any church that does so is doomed to fail, because you can't play God by saying that some people are better than others. This makes about as much sense as anything Piper said. Humidity is a sign of God's wrath, I'm telling ya. |
