zephyrgong says: They're top 10 widely spreadly elves in Chinese folklore, sorry it's too hard to translate their names to English, but the Chinese names are bellow: 狐仙(Fox spirits),龙女,夜叉(Yaksha),判官,牛头(Ox heads),马面(horse faces ),二郎(Erlang Shen ),七郎,刑天(Xing Tian),辟邪 I hope I can have time and ability to do some short description to each of them. There's already have a detailed list about Chinese mythology on Wikipedia(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_mythology), most of them have well described, but I think have some pictures will make more sense. Zephyr, great artworks! Can you recommend a site about the Elves in Chinese mythology, with some English texts? Last year I wrote a paper on "fairy" concept, its relation with the Elf, and the roots in Persian culture (Peri). I'd love to have parallel examples from Chinese folklore. Sorry, invictus, the Chinese mythology system is so complicated. It's even diffcult to find a site in Chinese which have the details. What I can do is recommend you to use wikipedia or google to search "Chinese mythology".Of course the best way to know a country's culture is learn their language and read their original books. This is absolutely terrific. I think I might ask my Chinese students about them; I don't know, however, how popular this kind of mythology is in China, and what their chances of knowing about them are. Regardless, I'm sure they'd be interested. Great clip! Of course the best way to know a country's culture is learn their language and read their original books.OK, wait a second, I'm going to learn Chinese - be right back in an hour or so. In fact, I die for learning Chinese and began collecting and browsing the sites that you and Rob posted on Chinese language. I've read a bunch of books on Chinese folk and mythology, beginning with Joseph Campbell's introductory works. I also did a brief research on Chinese astrology and cosmology. But I haven't much info on the Elf concept in Chinese culture. Thanks anyway, I'll look around the net and local bookstores then. This is really fantastic,I don't know about the south, but right here in the middle I knew only about NiuTou (ox head) and Ma Mian(horse face) since it's in the slang.I guess a classical literature geek would know about that. Great clip, and the art work is beautifully done. That is Poweful Art work! I couldn't read Chinese if my life depended on it. I would love to learn but I'm too lazy. Wonderful art. This is great! I've always loved faries and elves. Thank you. Stunning stuff! Amazing how some artists create magical color combinations. @zephyrgong: It looks fairly modern, is it? Since I can't read Chinese - are these works of art available for sale anywhere? |
