The fundamentalists are almost always scared of soft or unorthodox versions of religion, and when they're scared, they try to demolish what they do not understand. The same happens in every other religion, the gnostics in Christianity (as I understand) are shunned; the Hindus would not agree with what we call New Age now, and so it goes with puritanical Islam where Sufism is seen with distaste in some quarters. Just like Buddhists, not every Sufi strand is peaceful throughout the history, but from funamentalist point of view, they use the same brush for everyone.

You can destroy all man made alters and force worship underground but you can never destroy belief.
