balthazarus says: he notion of a strong Linux-based competitor to Windows and, to a lesser extent, Apple’s Mac OS X has been an enduring dream of advocates of open-source software. They champion the idea that software that can be freely altered by the masses can prove cheaper and better than proprietary code produced by stodgy corporations. Try as they might, however, Linux zealots have failed in their quest to make Linux mainstream on desktop and notebook computers. The often quirky software remains in the realm of geeks, not grandmothers. With Ubuntu, the devotees believe, things might finally be different. As someone who ran desktop linux for years and final gave up a while back, I can attest to the fact that Ubuntu has fundamentally changed the landscape of Linux on the desktop. Years ago, I would spend more time fussing, fixing, editing text files and finding the right x11 config than I would actually getting to use my computer to be productive. Today, I drop in an Ubuntu CD, install in 15 or so minutes, and I'm at work. A specialized version of ubuntu (mythbuntu) runs the media center in my home and is equally as easy to set up. There are still application gaps (most notably movie editing, graphic design, and gaming) but the platform they've brought together has leapfrogged Linux into it... I agree with you, I'm neither a geek nor a grandma and I would never accept to leave my Ubuntu to go back to any Windows. This is so easy and the community always give two solutions: * paste the code if you don't want or can't spend some time to understand * show how it works so you learn how to There's nothing like this with Windows and in a way this is quite logical, this is a whole way of seeing things. Linux (and even more the Ubuntu community) opens the minds and gives a sense of responsibility towards the others. Windows is just about paying to get, and being forced to pay more by changing things so what you have won't fit for long...
