Hmmm...the Soviet Union launched a spy satellite in 1974 which secretly had a 23 mm aircraft cannon, and they even destroyed a test satellite with it. Meanwhile the modern day Russian cosmonauts still possess a handgun in the International Space Station inside their emergency kit. It remains locked at all times, and NASA knows about it (nor does they contest it), but it's not often publicized.
