neat parlor trick but it has been known to power line crews for many, many years. For this guy to claim he 'discovered it' only shows his age. Or lack therof.

The electric field set up inside the tube excites atoms of mercury gas, making them emit ultraviolet light. This invisible light strikes the phosphor coating on the glass tube, making it glow.
