It is strange. One would assume that substance abuse is triggered by depression. However I have found that when the focus of treatment was on my depression I continued to drink while on anti-depressants and receiving therapy. When the focus of treatment became my addictions however, the depression became a side-issue and has disappeared as I have become sober.
