I thought this article was great and clipped it too but you beat me. Popped.

The REAL Napster
Wow. I have to do math now before eating the stuff I dropped? ; )

Luckily for me I only drop my food on the grill, and if those germs can handle my fire...they deserve to live.

The 3rd wheel has joined the brain trust. Who the hell do you think you are to just stamp a face of disapproval to a sarcastic comment to those where you were not concerned. You are so petty .

The tone of discussion in this community is of concern to everyone who cares about it. There was absolutely no reason for you to make such a comment.

Does anyone know how many bacteria they breathed in while reading the article- a helluva lot. Does anyone know why they're here right now- because they're parents survived the evil bacterial hordes lurking in every crevice. Do you think they were a bunch of p*ss**s like the rest of us Americans are becoming? How'bout your grandparents- do you think bacteria were around when they were alive? They were, and your grandparents survived them without having to sterilize every surface they touched. Try googling "the hygiene hypothesis," read about how the media has us so afraid of germs that were actually weakening our own immune systems (and especially those of our children who we no longer let play outside in the dirt)- it's pathetic.

Actually, I think merlinnme makes a valid point here. Are we fearful of the wrong things? What do you think JK?

comment.
And like everything else you are the arbiter of peace and goodwill.
There is no accounting in perceptions of brilliance. So regardless of how my comment was percieved by BR and Debbyski, Your intrusion and messianic complex is revolting. There is little doubt that that the intolerance and disgust comes from your side of the debate and is proven by a relunctance to engage logically and in an intellectully honest way. You are contemptable and foolish. But thanks for the childish little face. It speaks volumes.

Are we fearful of the wrong things?
Probably. I can't imagine the deadly forms of the Salmonella bacteria are that common on household surfaces, but I could be wrong (in the study the article talks about, researchers painted surfaces with salmonella bacteria and then laid pieces of bread and bologna on them--in that situation I would not even follow a 1-second rule, much less a 5-second one).

I was thinking about some of the things merlinnme said and these are some of my thoughts.

My grandparents were certainly tougher, in that they worked much harder but then again life expectancy was shorter. I am fully aware that I am crawling with bacteria both outside and inside but there is beneficial bacteria and harmful bacteria.

Many bacteria have evolved to be much more powerful and potent killers. I am concerned about the slow development of new antibiotics and the contrasting rapid rate bacteria is becoming resistant to antibiotics.

All in all if I am in my own house I abide by the 5 second rule but wouldn't outside. However, I have been blessed with an iron stomach and the times ...

Oops didn't see the already mentioned hygiene hypothesis. I knew they had determined that having pets as a young child helps to prevent development of asthma, didn't know they were calling it the hygiene hypothesis.

As Mom used to utter, "A little dirt never hurt anyone." Another was "We're campers, and that wouldn't bother a camper."

Are we fearful of the wrong things?
Well, I'm not afraid of Willhelm. How's that for a start?

I honestly didn't take any offense at all at Willhelm's comment. Matter of fact, I thought it was funny and laughed out loud. But the internet being the medium it is, I can see how others might have misinterpreted the comment and I thought it was a genuinely nice gesture that JK did so in a caring community based manner. I believe Willhelm when he says it was just a attempt at sarcasm.

With all the finger pointing of others being full of hate by willhelm, it is interesting to take a look at the definition of sarcasm.

sar·casm (särkzm)
n.
1. A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
2. A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.

This clip was featured on today's Clipiversity. Eric and I have different takes on it You'll have to take a listen to find out which one of us like to play in the dirt, and which one really appreciated the reminder to avoid germs in this clip.

Interesting comment BobbyRutan. We are devoting a lot of time lately (way more than i'd prefer) to working out a policy for how to deal with this issue. I think that jklugman is right on the money when he says, "The tone of discussion in this community is of concern to everyone who cares about it."

Debbyski, It is true my comment was a good-natured joke. I am glad you correctly took it as such and I appreciate you saying so. I did not take offense to the comment you made to me about it being profound that I could post a good clip like you did on my clip about fake photography. I also laughed and did not take offense. So, thank you for your honesty
However, if you think JK's comment was well intentioned you are sadly mistaken. When the Left smell blood, they attack like JK, EG and BR so often do. It is a credit to you that you do not take to bash like EG, JK, and BR are so prone to do.
This situation should demonstrate to anyone with objectivity the utter foolishness of jk, br a...

Hey willhelm, here's a refreshing idea. Why don't we all admit to pettiness, yourself included, myself included.

I fully admit to what gets under my skin. Clips like "BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS". Is that the beginning of a rational debate?

Plenty of guilt to go around.

Frankly BR, the reason I do not waste much time on your comments is that you have no pretense for rationality. At least JK thinks he knows what rationality is.

I never really pass any remarks on this sort of stuff. I wouldn't eat anything dropped on a carpet because it will likely have hairs attached, but if something falls on my own floor, I won't worry too much. It's probably one of the reasons I have such a strong immune system.

We all have an acquired and stronger immunity to the bacteria flora we have in our own homes and the places we often go due to frequent exposure to them. We touch our mouths and eyes after touching things all the time and our body learns and has developed antibodies towards these bacteria. It's foreign bacteria that are the biggest threat. That's why we can get holiday tummies when going abroad for example, where we are exposed to other slightly variant species. If I dropped something on a surface in MY house, I would probably eat it, but if I dropped it at someone else's house? ...no thank you.

My dirt is cleaner than other peoples dirt... ha ha... naaa, I just have a stronger immunity to...
