It was originally released in 1967 on the 1700 album. This is from the 1995 Lifelines album, which added Richie Havens, Carly Simon, and Lucy Simon to the rerecording. The Great Mandala is considered by some to be among the greatest of war protest songs.

OH, WOW!!!! This song affected me so much and helped me form a path of courage to become a conscientious objector and refuse to go to Vietnam!! Thank you for this, BB!!! I haven't heard or thought about this wonderful song for many years....Wow! You can't know how much this song saved my soul and probably my Hippie ass, to boot!

After my Dad, a Marine in WWII and lifer in the Army later, refused to talk to me for years after I refused--I sent him this song on a tape with an explanation of why I refused. He never spoke of that but on one memorable day when I had come from Hawaii for a visit--he broke down and told me, "y'now, you were right not to go when you got drafted-- I respect you for that and standing up and not running away..." Chills went up my spine, believe me.It took courage for him to say that to me (if you had know him...) and we were very close after that, like when I was a kid! Amazing what one son can do, neh?

I think that if there had been a draft in recent years things might have been very different. It was largely the energy of youth facing the reality of being ground meat that caused the political activism of the '60s. This time 'round it was just headlines to ignore while you keep your head buried in your XBOX. I'm sure that BushCo understands this and used it to their advantage.
