No matter what you think about Castro if you go to Cuba and talk to the people you will find that he is genuinely popular and in the main Cubans are happy with their lifestyle.

Well, it can't be pleasant to live somewhere where the leader pays no attention to the people's wishes and just does what he wants to, where the people have to rights and secret wiretaps can cause people to be "disappeared" for years for no reason, just on the suspicion of some low level flunky who hears something on a wiretap he doesn't understand. And Cuba probably isn't much better.
