enbar says: Today was the international Day against the Death Penalty. Worldwide, more countries are placing moratoria on executions. Only "25 countries carried out executions in 2006," and "91% [were] in just six countries: China, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan and the USA." Hmm. I suppose we're in good company. Good information, I just would know a graph of execution per country... why the capital punishment should stop? why should the govts and the innocent tax payers of a country should pay for the upkeepment of a monster, a rapist, a murderer et all? why? Let me quote Helen Prejean: "Government ... can’t be trusted to control its own bureaucrats or collect taxes equitably or fill a pothole, much less decide which of its citizens to kill." First, I am lukewarm against the death penalty. I actually want to have enough faith in the system to support the death penalty. But I don't have enough faith in the system, so I can't. What I find interesting is how the article lumps the US in with these other countries to score political points. It is a fallacy for the weak-minded. There were 1591 executions reported in the world last year. However, China may have had double that by themselves. Of the 1591executions, 53 occurred in the US (in only 12 states). 1538 occurred in the other 4 countries. It seems there were other countries with many more executions than the US. I also doubt the US was in the top 5 as this article seems to suggest. There were 1591 executions reported in the world last year. However, China may have had double that by themselves.
Thank you, for bringing things to ligth. Thank you, Thank you. Obrigado...You have just shined. |
