Interesting clip.

but had left behind a single item: a meticulously crafted wooden box adorned with a Star of David and a seven-branched menorah
Apparently, although they looted extensively, the Nazis could be quite superstitious and in many instances would leave religious artifacts alone. Perhaps by happenstance this was one of those occasions.

Indeed. I am interested in finding out more. So far, I've only managed to locate a small photo of the box and two very small copies of the 99 illustrations. They were too puny to clip. Still looking though. If you find anything, please clip it for me. Many thank.

As an aside..I personally dislike that photo. It makes it appear as though everyone is yuckin' it up, while in reality the visit was very solemn and emotional.

There are so many stories to tell and hear. Keep looking Michellezm. Maybe others can help.

If there is "collective guilt," for the Holocaust then all Americans are now guility for the crimes of Iraq, the wars in the Middle East, the torture of prisoners, etc.

But although this is happening there are millions of Americans active against it: All are not guilty.

Same thing was true in Germany: All were not guilty. There were many fighting against the evil of Nazi's like we fight today against the evil of warmongering Republicans, neo-cons and all those others pushing to invade Iran next, etc.

I'd rather hear more talk about those activist in Germany who fought for the good...

Yes, well, you may be sick and tired of it, but multitudes are not. Until several generations have passed, these wounds won't heal. I know all about guilt. I'm a white South African who was born and benefited under the white minority South African Apartheid Regime. I too wish that the wounded would heal and get on with life. But that is simply because it's uncomfortable for me. It's all about me and not those whose lives were tainted, maimed, murdered and brutalised. The same applies to Nazi Germany. "The sins of the fathers are visited upon the children unto the third and fourth generation" (Bible). Modern Germans must bear the guilt of their fathers if for no other reason that to ...

Well said Michelle. May I also add:
No sorrows are so bitter as those that are without a trace of nobility.
