conservative and liberal are actually adjectives that must have a particular context to have any meaningful definition.

Example: The Tories were conservative during King George's reign in England, but the American colonists went liberal in 1776 and rebelled against their tyranny. We did not like those conservatives because they trampled our God-given liberties. To tyrannical England's Parliament Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, and Ben Franklin were "liberals".

For the same reason traditional conservatives and liberals BOTH hate Bush legislation like REAL ID and the PATRIOT ACT because they trample the Constitution which preserves our liberties.
