I clipped this story a while back from the NY times. There is also an interesting segment about freedom of speech on Dr. Phil's website. I recommend watching the whole show.

There are already enough laws! Start legislating more,especially with regards to free speech,and democracy is indeed doomed.As for cyber bullies,
they can always be dealt with online or in civil suits or criminal legislation which already exists.

I watched the show, so sad that a grown woman would resort to that kind of actions against a child. She should be sued since she admitted in a police report that she was a willing participate in her own home.

This is a tragedy. I have children and cannot imagine this happening. But don't see this as falling squarely on the other woman.

The woman posing as the internet boy is definitely guilty of being directly involved in the death of the girl. However, I have to wonder at the actions of the mother who not only dismissed the claims of her daughter, but then began to berate her.

It just seems to me that there had to be more underlying problems leading up to a teenager choosing suicide and a parent that would immediatly turn upon their kid when they are so distraught. I think the Dr. Phil show was slanted to take the focus away from the family in order to focus on passing internet restriction law...

Had the technology of mass extermination been available to mediaeval evil doers it would without doubt have been used. The problem of malicious gossip is not with technology but with malignant and malevolent human hearts that use gossip as a weapon.

I heard on the news last night that there apparently is a little known federal law that can be used for simply annoying somebody online.

@shaine
The law can be used to annoy someone online or the law can be used against people that annoy others online? What law is it? You can't drop a little tidbit like that and just move on. Spill the beans man!

Yes, please do. Someone ignorant is "annoying" the hell out of me today with their troll like behavior. But then, I always consider the source, and what comes around always goes around

It will always come back and bite them in the rear end. Bad things will happen to bad people, karma, I guess.
