wildcat says: “What was once only science fiction is now becoming a reality, and we need to ensure that experimentation and subsequent ramifications do not outpace ethical discussion and societal decisions. I noticed at one news source that a scientist had cloned himself. Brings a new meaning to schizoid. Reckons he can now examine his inner self. There are some jokes here for the witty. I'm not seeing anything that shows that this is bad? As the article said, there is no intention of bringing to full term the cybrids. Is it all just a fear of new technology and an irrational comparison to fictional movies. I'm sure that when heart/liver/kidney/organ transplants where new there were/are religious rejections and people pointing to movies like "Frankenstein", "The Hand", and others. But isn't this just emotional over-reaction that will do nothing more than hinder science? This science is not developing just for shits and giggles. It does lead to some potential breakthroughs and understandings in genetics All this sort of work is intended to lead, eventually, to dise... Through DNA experimentation Dr. Moreau has upset the balance of nature. By turning animals into humans, he's turned heaven into hell.the article does bring to mind Dr. Moreau's Island; and the one scientist that just needs to bring one of those cybrids to full term. Although, Oortcloud does have a good valued point about embryonic stem cells............ Oortcloud, thank you. As anyone who's ever tried to have children will tell you, even with IVF it is far from guaranteed certainty. I'm dismayed when I talk to people who think that you just add a bit of cow DNA and a bit of human DNA, mix it in a bucket in your evil (yes, science is evil) laboratory and then Hey presto! Cow / human hybrid killing machine monster! And the more likely thing is that if such a creature did exist, it would probably spend most of its time eating grass and moo-ing, not crushing buildings and cars Godzilla style! </rant> If they can do it they will. I remember when the invitro fertilization program started, there was concern that the embryo use would go beyond and include things such as cloning. Assurances were given, and all surplus embryos would be destroyed-so there's nothing to worry about. We've come a long way since then. No-one today can give assurances, because they have no idea what can be done with a technology once it has developed. They make promises about something that will be beyond their control. If the public don't approve however, the research will continue, the public just wont be told. |
