That's a clever illustrative example.
However, let's say Gates walks into the bar, and the guy next to him engages him in conversation. Being impressed on his attitude (or experience, qualifications, etc.), Gates offers him a higher paying job.

Yes, the inequality of income widened, but all of the bar will be toasting their friend's fortune (fortune in the sense of seized opportunity). Well, I guess not all of the bar will be celebratory...there's always one or two who watch in envy while cursing under their breath wondering why such things don't happen to them.
