dakotayii says: If music be the food of love [see note, left, about this verse + its opening] then laughter is its queen and likewise if behind is in front then dirt in truth is clean note:[Roland from BtP notes: inspection of the typescript in Gary Brooker's album compiling all Keith Reid's original lyrics shows the order of the two 'extra' verses reversed, and reveals 'life', not 'love', in the 'ocean bed' verse (which enriches the Shakespeare quotation there in the same way as 'fandango' enriches Milton's 'light fantastic' earlier in the song). These two facts were first published in my liner note to Secrets of the Hive – to which Keith and Gary have both given the thumbs-up] My mouth by then like cardboard seemed to slip straight through my head So we crash-dived straightway quickly and attacked the ocean be One of most mysterious songs ever written IMO, best explained by Mike Butler in 'Lives of the Great Songs'- The song explores what it means to be wrecked, in more than one sense of the word. A nervous seducer sustains his courage with alcohol. As he becomes more drunk, his impressions of his unfamiliar partner become confused by stray thoughts, fragments of childhood reading and his own faint-hearted aspirations. The song's recurring metaphor is of maritime disaster, and a parallel is drawn between romantic conquest and the allure and peril of the sea. The hero is a callow juvenile, far happier with a book than risking the emotional bruising of relationships. This ambivalence is underscored ... oh man! that song takes me back some years, had some wonderful parties back then and great dancing! |
