Nothing like a virus to keep the programmers on their toes. If a virus hits a system, the view of the system changes from something that is operational, to something that needs to be improved to take this new invader into account. There is the chance for inventive solutions to be included. Improvement can accompany virus defense.
A virus can remind us what it is like to live without a computer, or allow us to establish procedures to reestablish links when a virus knocks out a few servers.
Real viruses are supposed to strengthen the immune system, but no-one likes getting the flu.
We just need an operating system with a self defense mechanism, that can evolve with the malware.
