I have a poster that shares each religion's variation on the Golden Rule. Treat others as you would wish to be treated. Thing is, if a person(s) lack empathy can they ever really follow the Rule?

Being conscious of including in ones life is the start.
Even this old atheist is influenced by rules that the churches also place high value on, in theory.

Uhh. Sure. Leaving the boneyard that is Iraq and moving into Afghanistan to slaughter some more Muslims while patting Israel on the back for their own Arab rump-roast doesn't really sound like the golden rule or dignity to me.
