She is tough and isn't it puzzling how one can be so soft and frail at death. We are all this way, I think.

Her angelic face always looked like home to me. My whole life, as soon as I'd see my mother's face I'd know I was safe, whether I was a little girl lost in a department store or a big girl with a problem, who needed her mother.

I know this feeling. Even my mother's voice can move me like no other sound. Sometimes hearing her say "how are you?" will open the floodgates.

How very touching & dear. I've never felt that way about my parents. Though an only child, I don't think we ever bonded. Even though I'm taking care of my Mom I often wonder what happened.

I'm so sorry for Ann as she has a lot of enemies because of her politics and wit; but she has many who admire her and appreciate her frankness. Her mother obviously had a powerful influence on her and I wonder what she was like. Thanks for posting this.

Ps:Thanks for the lovely comments, I have enjoyed them. I lost my own beautiful step-dad to cancer last September, and my mother has been quite ill this year, (damn cancer again), so naturally these pieces have struck a heart-chord.
