I have had wonderful experience with my wife by giving other than roses then explaining the meaning.

Try this: On the birthday week of your favorite other, each day give her a different flower meaning one thing that applies to her.
On your anniversary: Give her a bouquet that shows the meanings of your marriage. Print up a card that tells all the meanings and put it in the bouquet.
Roses are so overdone they lose meaning.

You know how you can mix jelly belly jellybeans to get different flavors.
You can mix different flowers to get different expressions of love.
