gingembre says: "The elephants of decimated herds, especially orphans who’ve watched the death of their parents and elders from poaching and culling, exhibit behavior typically associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma-related disorders in humans: abnormal startle response, unpredictable asocial behavior, inattentive mothering and hyperaggression." This 10-page article is well worth your time and attention! This article really disturbed me. It disturbs me, too. Ignoring the symptoms of sick societies, whether elephant or human, simply allows the conditions to deteriorate past the point of no return for all of us. Some of us seek social reforms to alleviate the cause of the disorders. Others label the symptomatic individuals (or classes) a threat and seek to kill them. I find it particularly painful to know of the suffering of animals who cannot help themselves due to the actions of humans. |
